Sock Wars: Which Fabric Reigns Supreme

Introduction:

There are 4 main materials that are used to make socks. Each has its benefits, but it depends on what you need the sock for.

There are a lot of questions that need to be answered before you can choose the right sock for you:

  • Is the sock for everyday use?
  • Are you needing them for hiking, or sport?
  • Do your feet sweat a lot, or do your feet get really cold in the winter?

Polyester, cotton, and wool are the most common materials used to make socks, but bamboo is quickly becoming one of the best. So, let’s have a look at their pro’s and con’s

Polyester Socks:

Polyester is a man-made petroleum-based synthetic fibre. Made by weaving plastic fibres very closely together. Polyester socks are very durable, a strong material. they last much longer than say a cotton sock. Polyester, as well as being quick drying, they hold their colour better and longer. There are several downsides to Polyester socks though. First, they are non-absorbent therefore making your feet feel hotter. Second, because they are manufactured with plastic, they do not breakdown once thrown away. so not ideal for the planet.

Cotton Socks:

Cotton Socks are much softer than polyester, they are more absorbent than polyester, so they do keep moisture under control and your feet will sweat less. Cotton is very light, but does not have much stretch, so can feel tight on the foot. Pure Cotton socks can be quite a bit more expensive than other materials, especially if they are 100% cotton. However, if you get a material mix, they become much more affordable.

Wool Socks:

Wool or Merino socks can absorb up to 30% of its weight in water, so socks made with wool can keep your feet dry in most conditions. Wool socks also keep their insulating properties, even when they are wet, with excess sweat or water, they won’t make your feet cold. Wool socks are very insulating, so wearing them in summer will make your feet feel very hot. They are definitely suited more to the winter months. Woollen socks are generally more expensive but are very cushioning if you stand on your feet all day.

Bamboo Socks:

Bamboo is the softest material, much softer than cotton, it feels very soft more like cashmere or silk. Bamboo socks are very comfy, making them most likely the most popular of all the sock materials. Bamboo socks are very absorbent, so they protect your feet from moisture and keep your feet dry, even when they are sweating. They provide excellent ventilation. They only downside to Bamboo is they take a long time to dry, but if you don’t mind waiting that extra time. then Bamboo is a great choice.
