Plantar Fasciitis & Heel Spurs in Adelaide
Struggling with sharp heel pain when you get out of bed in the morning? You could be suffering from plantar fasciitis, one of the most common causes of heel pain we see at Leading Edge Podiatry.
We provide expert diagnosis and customised treatment plans to get you walking pain-free again—without relying on unnecessary surgery.
What Is Plantar Fasciitis?
Your plantar fascia is a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, connecting your heel bone to your toes. When this ligament becomes overstretched, strained, or degenerates, it can lead to painful inflammation known as plantar fasciitis.
In some cases, a small heel spur (a bony growth) can also form at the base of the heel bone. However, the pain usually comes from the irritated fascia rather than the spur itself.
Why Do I Have Heel Pain?
Common causes of plantar fasciitis and heel pain include:
- Sudden increase in activity or exercise
- Poor footwear or lack of cushioning
- Standing or walking on hard surfaces (e.g., concrete or tile)
- Age-related changes to your foot arch
- Reduced heel fat pad from ageing or high impact
- Tight calf muscles or Achilles tendon
- Poor biomechanics and foot alignment
Common Plantar Fasciitis Symptoms
Recognising the signs early can help prevent the condition from worsening. Typical symptoms include:
- Sharp pain under the heel, especially when first standing in the morning
- Pain after rest or long periods of sitting
- Stiffness in the heel and arch, particularly after inactivity
- Tenderness on the underside of the heel
- Burning or stabbing sensation
- Worsening pain after standing, walking, or exercise
- Pain radiating into the arch or ankle
- Progressive discomfort that becomes more constant over time
